Crisis which happened in 1997 affected economic condition of Indonesian nation. In response to the issue, on September 17, 1998, some energetic youths did social actions in most areas in Indonesia.
To follow up the actions, they initiated public care entity which can move systematically. Thus, on December 10, 1999, a social institution named PKPU was formed.
In its development, PKPU realizes that potential and people’s fund coming from Zakat (alms), Infaq (liable donations) and Shadaqah (voluntary donation) are big. As the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, Indonesia can maximize its ZIS religious fund to empower the poor.
On October 8, 2001, PKPU was recognized as the National Zakat Institution based on the decree (SK) of the Indonesian Religious Minister No 441. It proves that public trust to PKPU is getting huge.
On Tuesday, July 22, 2008, the National Humanitarian Institution PKPU has been registered in the UN as an institution with “Special Consultative Status” from the Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc)
